In which Riah tries to use his cuteness to avoid picking up a cucumber
Written by Elizabeth
Mosquitoes are swarming around the camper, so we are eating dinner inside. It is a delicious spread of fresh veggies, crackers, hummus, nuts, grapes, and raspberries (hand-picked by Riah). We are all eating peacefully until…
[Riah begins rubbing his food all over the table]
Elizabeth: Riah, please stop.
Riah: [continuing] Rrrrraaahhhhh!!!
Angela: [Grabbing Riah’s arm] No, Riah.
Riah: [Grabbing a cucumber with the other arm, dipping it in hummus, and throwing it on the ground]
[The hummus-dipped cucumber splats onto the dirty floor]
Angela: NO, Riah!
[Elizabeth sets Riah on the ground]
Angela: Please pick up your cucumber. It’s important to clean up when we make a mess.
Riah: [Blank stare]
Angela: [Using a stern voice] Riah, please pick up the cucumber. Right now.
Riah: [Sweet but defiant stare]
Angela: [Trying a tactic we read about in which one sings rather than speaking harshly]
Riah, please pick up your cucumber, your cucumber, your cucumber…It’s important to clean up our mess! La la la!
Riah: [Pulling a book off of the bench] Book?
Angela: Yes, that’s a book.
Riah: [Pulling another book] Book?
Elizabeth: Yes, that’s a book. You can read after you pick up the cucumber.
Riah: [Pointing to the cover of the book and looking up with big brown eyes]
Angela: Yes, that’s the moon. We’ll read after you pick up your cucumber.
Angela: [Trying the singing tactic again] Please pick up your cucumber, la la la, la la la, please pick up your cucumber. We should be responsible, responsible, responsible, and clean up our messes. La la la
Riah: [Pointing to the drawer where his art supplies are] Draw?
Angela: You can draw after you pick up the cucumber.
Riah: [Turning to Elizabeth] Draw?
Elizabeth: We can draw after you pick up your cucumber. We need to clean up when we make a mess.
Riah: [Imitating when Angela wrote his name in the sand, pretends to write his name on the floor, starting with the letter R]
Elizabeth: [Reaching down and pointing directly to the cucumber] Riah, please pick up the cucumber that you threw.
Riah: [Whines and begins to fuss]
Elizabeth: [Holding the plate inches from the cucumber] Riah, you don’t have to eat the cucumber, but you do need to pick it up and put it on the plate.
Riah: [Picking up the cucumber and stuffing it into his mouth] Mmmmmmm!!
