[ Guiding Principles]
“Everywhere I turn, oh the beauty just keeps shaking me.” –Indigo Girls, “World Falls”
Our interests in science, religion, and travel have fused within our family to create an insatiable thirst for wonder. With backgrounds in the study of religion, we have discovered that religion alone cannot satiate this thirst. The beauty, expansiveness, and intricacy of the natural world now provide us with a spirit of wonder. Our little family practices wonder in three primary ways:
“When we recognize our place in an immensity of light-years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual.” –Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World
Expanding beyond the confines of religion, we honor and celebrate that innate worth that resides in all beings. We seek to nurture this worth with mindfulness and gratitude.
We don’t want to be serious all the time! Silliness and humor combine to celebrate the spirit of playfulness residing in us all. Laughing, dancing, and singing are most certainly an important part of our philosophy.
The world is a beautiful place and our family wants to explore and celebrate every inch of it! We see beauty in nature, animals, humanity, and one another.
We hope that cultivating a stance of wonder during our year will lead us to take more just and compassionate actions in the world.
